Poatina Village is involved in a regional Tourism Hub Group in association with the Heritage Highway Touring Route. The tourism industry is seen as a sustainable source of income for the Village and the broader community, with numerous interstate and overseas visitors holidaying in Tasmania each year.

Poatina Village is home to a studio of Northern Midlands' communinity radio station, 95.7 HeartFM. The Station has an easy listening format, with greatest hits, country classics, sports shows, tourist information and upbeat music for young people each evening from 9pm.

Poatina Village has become a valuable resource centre for the people of Tasmania. It has superb conference facilities and can cater for groups with up to 180 delegates. Being centrally located it makes the ideal location for statewide conferences and camps.

In April 2000, Poatina joined the global village of the world with the opening of the Poatina Online Access Centre. These Centres were initiated to educate rural Tasmanians in information technology.

Poatina Online Access Centre provides free internet access and computer usage for residents, local farmers, and visiting tourists, as well as regular use by the many students undertaking training study in the Village. It is run by volunteers, with one-on-one assistance being readily available for patrons lacking IT skills.

Most of the Fusion Centres around Tasmania actively work with high school students and are involved with statewide Shows. A number of staff living in Poatina regularly travel to these centres and provide valuable support. This can be in the way of conducting day seminars challenging students to make healthy life choices, or training staff, or simply turning up for work when others are down with the flu.

Each year, Poatina Village hosts its annual Australia Day Family Festival and grueling Great Wheelbarrow Race. The day includes festival activities, live entertainment, face painting, children’s crafts and ladies gumboot toss. The Village enjoys the opportunity to give something back to the broader community and being able to provide free family fun.

Poatina Village has an Open Day in July each year. All aspects of the Village are put on display, including the Chalet, Training Centre, radio studio and employment education programs.

Young people are invited to be a part of the youth educational training programme. In most cases, the young person has had a difficult and unpleasant upbringing, disconnection with family units, or a lack of healthy parental rolemodelling. They generally have a strong desire to make something worthwhile of their lives and a willingness to allow others to help them.

Positively structured time schedules are set for their individual needs, and agreed contracts enable the youth team to effectively help each person attain their short and long term goals. The community as a whole, stands behind the youth team by providing supportive networks and host families. If a young person decides they cannot keep to their contract, they are free to leave at any time.

Poatina Village has received an incredibly warm response from the broader community. It is known for its excellence in hospitality as a tourist destination, and for its professionalism and effectiveness in working with young people.

After closely scrutinizing Fusion Australia’s plan for Poatina, the loudest support came from the Northern Midlands Council which saw new hope and opportunity for its young people. At the Official Opening in June 1995, Mayor Kenneth Von Bibra said:

“Northern Midlands welcomes Fusion to Poatina. It is critical to the well being of so many people that this experiment and this challenge is going to be successful!”

After visiting Poatina in 1997 and seeing Fusion Australia’s plan in action, the State Government’s Minister for Youth said:

“Fusion are doing what we have been talking about. They involve the community. They have business outlets and are training young people. Its integrated!”

Fusion Poatina’s youth programmes have been welcomed with open arms into District Schools, and include Advent Pageants, Lunchtime programs, Cafe's and more. The development of a positive culture and relationship building is evident.

In recent years, local government bodies have recognised the professionalism and effectiveness of Fusion Australia and have out-sourced their youth budget to Fusion to run their youth work.
